Why Most Skylight Installations Leak

Skylights don't leak because of the skylight — they leak because of how they're installed. The flashing around a skylight is the most complex waterproofing detail on any residential roof. Water has to be redirected around a raised curb from every direction, including wind-driven rain flowing uphill.

Most roofing companies avoid skylight work because it's difficult. The ones that attempt it often use generic flashing instead of manufacturer-specified systems. The result: leaks within a year.

The Difference Is in the Flashing

VELUX manufactures a specific flashing kit for each skylight model and roof type — step flashing, head flashing, sill flashing, and a continuous membrane that ties into the surrounding underlayment. It's engineered as a system.

We install each kit exactly per VELUX specifications, then integrate with the surrounding shingles or metal so water flows over the flashing and never pools against the curb. This is the step most installers skip.
